About
Can your business sell into the rest of Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Area, and what would it actually take? This course answers that question for Kenyan businesses, in practical detail, using the institutions and procedures you will really deal with. AfCFTA gives Kenyan exporters preferential access to a market of more than 1.4 billion people. As at September 2026, 50 of 55 African Union member states have ratified the agreement, and Somalia became the 50th on 6 September 2026. The preference is available now. The work is on your side: classify your product correctly, meet the rule of origin, get the certificate, assemble the documents. What Kenya has actually shipped under AfCFTA is instructive. The first documented consignment was Exide car batteries from Associated Battery Manufacturers to the Port of Tema in Ghana, flagged off on 23 September 2022 and valued at KSh 9.3 million. The Trade Ministry also records value-added tea to Ghana in October 2022, and reports that by December 2024 over 78 certificates of origin had been issued to Kenyan exporters under the Guided Trade Initiative, covering exports worth roughly KSh 800 million in hides and skins, energy-saving jikos, batteries and plastic products, going to Ghana and South Africa. That is a pilot, not a transformation. Which is exactly why early, deliberate movers have room to work. WHAT YOU LEARN Five core modules, each ending in a quiz: an honest current picture of AfCFTA and what it changes; HS code classification and the free binding advance ruling from KRA that most exporters never use; trade protocols and rules of origin, including the actual tests and thresholds in Annex 2 and how to calculate local content; the Kenyan export document set, who issues each piece and what it costs; and a structured export readiness assessment with a 90-day plan. Then three application tracks, because readers arrive with different jobs to do. Explorer, if you are deciding whether exporting is for you. Connector, if you advise or represent others and need to explain this accurately. Practitioner, if you already have a buyer and need the mechanics in order. WHAT MAKES IT USEFUL Everything is Kenya-specific and sourced. KRA Rules of Origin offices and what a certificate costs. The KenTrade single window and how to register. KEPHIS fees for phytosanitary certification. The distinction between a KEBS domestic mark and what a destination market actually requires. The iCMS and eTIMS change that took effect in May 2026 and will stop your export entry if your invoicing is not ready. Where a figure moves, we date it. Where we could not verify something, we say so and tell you which office to ask. Trade facts age quickly, and a confident number without a source is a liability. WHAT IT IS NOT This course is written lessons with worked examples, checklists and quizzes. It does not issue a certificate or qualification. It does not include downloadable template packs, video tutorial libraries or interactive calculators. It is not legal, tax or customs advice, and it is not a substitute for an advance ruling from KRA on your own product. Self-paced, on any device, with lifetime access.
